project idea

Narutowicza square is attractive area near the center of Warsaw. Unfortunately, one of the main transit roads in the city has swallowed this square, rendering it noisy, unaccessible and abandoned - a blank space on the map.

Our project aims to renew the square so it can become living public space.

The first step in doing so is re-organizing the cars circulation. By straightening the transit road passing through the square we open it from one side for pedestrians. From the other side, we decided to create a tunnel under the road so people can enter the square from both sides.

The main design guideline for the project was a play of levels - as people enter the square at two different ones, with 4 meters of difference between them. The surface of the square descends below the street level, lowering the noise level.
A software tool was developed to aid us in designing the final form.
