Design process: a historical trend and a contemporary science

Yet, design has not always been a rational process; up until the Great War design was oft en
a chaotic aff air in that consultation and consensus were barely evident. Design was not a total process.
Th e work of participants in the process was oft en compartmentalized, each having little if any input in
matters which fell outside the boundaries of their specifi c expertise. Th us, participants explored their
ideas unilaterally, with one or another participant, through virtue of their “expertise”, imposing constraints
upon all others. In this way, the craft sman has a veto on matters to do with skill or availability
of materials, the engineer had a veto on technological considerations, and the patron alone could impose
considerations of taste and fi nance.

In the course of the human conscious with the evolution of the human brain,
design have been taking a drastic shift but a persistent one to shape the way we live, adapt,
and be shaped by our space, forms, and industries.
Th is paper won’t give a fi nal answer to what is design, but will scrutinize in
historical fact of design evolution from one side and the progress in the understanding of
the human brain. And to instigate it is worth looking at certain examples of brilliant minds
that shift ed and shacked our human understanding and our conventions. Th e attempt
to move human creatures and their humanity from the center of the universe and their
unique existence and decedent from god with people like Darwin and Copernicus, others;
announced the death of the senses and God, with Nietzsche and Descartes, and last came
the awakening of the psychology with people like Freud. Th ough all these back and forth
movements of human awakening keeps repeating themselves for the sake of understanding
them from one side and evolve to the level of their implications from another we still fi nd
ourselves in total confusion when we are asked the question of design…
A full gear acceleration of the design process through the history can be explored
with the dimension of the brain, where the process always went hand in hand with the
brain exploitation and the understanding of the human, from the level of dissection and dimension
till the level of a full channeling of body, brain, and the existence in its surrounding.
To start, what could be called a historical narration and communication between
design and the metaphor of the human being, “As the oldest written existing proof ” Vitruvius
opens the fi rst lesson on design with “De Architectura” focusing on a humanistic
brain, he tilled the path for people like Alberti and Da Vinci, where at a point it wasn’t
enough to erect a dome or sketch a machine or a building, but went farther to dissect the
human anatomy and extract proportions to defi ne new notions for beauty that are not
based on simple observation but towards golden proportions that explain nature and express
in written explanations and erected structural proof, to an extent that they resonated
in the 21st century with work like Corbusier and his modular for architecture.
Th is humanistic brain was destined to push forward and always towards understanding
the metaphor of the human being that resembles beauty, and this time an
enlightened age invade the design thinking with a brain that not only considers the golden
proportion, but a deeper understanding of what lies beneath the body and its organic
nature, now beauty needs a deeper defi nition. Th is new defi nition had enough proof in the
human senses, and though this extended later to deeper feeling, it was enough at this moment
of the enlightened age to become a battle between what we see and what we hear, and
it was enough to diff erentiate between the complexity of the mind in processing an image
through the eye verses the direct relation between the sense of hearing and the brain, making
design and it’s process much more complex than a symphony that is digested by the ear,
now vision is understood as a complex process that is transmitted and simulated. Th is put
the sense of vision at a higher level, and for the fi rst time the element of design becomes
what we perceive and not its existential paradigm.
People like “Perrault, Laugier, and Le Roy” as a general example went on dissecting
ideas, not human anatomy; extracting examples and stressing that the complexity of
the eye is the main root to understand beauty, it becomes like a discovery of the designers’
ego, now the new mission is to impress by media and revert the notion of beauty from the
object itself to the observing subject, in the age of no television or media the imagination
and the visual culture was a direct refl ection of how each culture digest beauty, in its own
notion and cultural education away from a global vision and notion.
With this specifi city of acknowledgment and aft er the battle of the “hear, see” the
idea of the senses as a drive to understand beauty went farther to express itself in a more
“Sensational Brain” now it became impossible to depend on just the process of images, the
whole action of the senses becomes like a museum to explore without limits, if in earlier
understanding the notion of beauty shift ed from the object to the gazer, now with people
like Burke, Price, and Knight it took a deeper understanding of a living metaphor, where
beauty is not just a perfect cultural understanding of images processed in the brain, but
drama, repetition, satire… all had their own beauty. Objects become a subliminal experience,
they came to life with the involvement of a humanistic interface, now object have
their own aura…
“Beauty,” he argues, “is not a quality in things themselves: it exists merely in the mind which
contemplates them; and each mind perceives a diff erent beauty.” And if each brain perceives a diff erent
beauty it is because each brain has diff erent experiences on which to base the judgment. What prevents
judgments of beauty from collapsing into solipsism or extreme subjectivity for Hume, however, is another
quality of the brain, which is its uniformity of operation. If two individuals cultivate the brain’s aesthetic
sensibilities to the same extent they should always fi nd agreement on the matter of what is beautiful, and
if they disagree the reason must lie elsewhere.
An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding
Th is sensational age for judgment started shedding light on chemical processes
in the brain were at the same time trigger euphoric experience. Beauty fi nds a balanced
understanding, a more subliminal one that extend to the level of drama and the integration
of various beauty, now a “deteriorating elevation” with the “erosion of time” have its
own beauty; a beauty that is exaggerated to the level of the Greek theater and stretched to
the modern one, now the observer and the actor exchange and interact, a new novelty is
integrated either progressive or conservative it always depicts a touch of the picturesque at
once and hideous at another, but the sensuality is fundamental…
Th is sensual awakening, and the amalgamation of body mind chemical structure,
defi ned a new duality, a duality of “dialectic and dialogic”, now beauty is rooted in satisfaction,
and satisfaction is the action and reaction of chemical injections and neurological
transitions at the speed of light, the body no longer exists without the understanding of
the brain and vice versa, a transcendental brain that shapes the actions of the body, and
nerve ending structure that perceives the world around; all exist for a purpose to survive
and sustain, this idea of body mind channeling dictated a new path for the design process,
a process that is based on punishment and reward, now experience is more important
than the object, skillful thinking is more important than being stuff ed with preconvention…
But what if the senses were not passive, that is, what if the brain were already involved in
structuring sensations before they become perceptions? What we would then have are not perceptions
of the world, but only perceptions of the “forms of sensibility” by which the brain organizes the world.

… Experience and thinking, mind and body, an existential purpose! With this
visualization towards a new pedestal for design process and with the awakening of the
dual channeling it became impossible to understand architecture design in specifi c without
its mere purpose, and to elevate this fi eld higher than the artistic harmony, the nerve
system started extending beyond the boundary of the skin and the new contemporary
man doesn’t exist without the space, now it all works as one system, it’s an age of phenomenal
body space performance, thou it may sound poetic, but it’s judgmental persistence
pushed the design process to a new level, architecture now can never be perceived without
it’s hybrid psychology, space is not empty matter to be fi lled, it became the symbol of the
living nothingness driven by invisible factors that tend to shape our existence and we
shaping them. Th is existence and acceptance for a divine persistence celebrated a new human
concept for reference, a new extroverted notion for design and a continuous stretch,
design is no longer comprehended only by the space, it protracts to a genius loci.
Th is new animated meaning, expression of duality, and expanding hybrid
materiality, from the simple physiological proportion to the complex psychological order
defi ned a never ending stretching path, that thou it was summarized with few expressions
and examples, but can be beyond control in descriptive literature and tons of books and
megabits circulate ideas to fi nd answers to a simple root question “what is design”?
In this previous part design process took a journey in the history of the philosophical
and practical evolution, stressing in our minds the possibility to learn from history where
each one fi nds a unique understanding and a personal expression to sustain, a design
that is colored with diff erences away from a global trend; for, discovering a global trend,
reduces location, space, and human duality into a global form, a form that our present
answer is not a metaphor of life but of machines.
Th is coming section is an awakening of the human mind in a new fi eld, now
design abides by scientifi c rules and trends; it will be experimented and diagnosed using
scientifi c methods… And since Scientifi c and technological revolution in the mid-20th
century caused the transformation of the industrial society of postindustrial, Science
becomes a leading factor in the production. Invention of computers has greatly changed
the manufacturing process at the same time simplifying and complicating it. Th e demand
for highly qualifi ed personnel stimulates the intellectual development of society. Automation
of routine production processes reduces the proportion of people directly employed
in production and increases the number of people employed in services.
Development of services is also a main feature of the formation of post-industrial
society in accordance with the defi nition of post-industrial society - Wikipedia, the
post-industrial society - a society in which the economy as a result of the technological
revolution and signifi cant growth in personal income came from the pre-emptive priority
of producing goods to producing services, at the same time increasing the welfare of many
people. Intellectual growth and improving creative skills became an important component
in the scale of social values.
Aft er basic material needs have been met the intellectually developed society,
begins placing increased demands on the quality of goods and services consumed.
In an eff ort to attract consumer attention and increase the demand, manufacturers are
striving to improve the quality and attractiveness of its product. Under these conditions,
particularly important is the process of idea development and product design.
Th e word design fi rst appeared in the 16th century. Italian expression «designo intero»
means the birth of the idea by artist or by God given inspiration. ( the term
design refers to the creative work, which aims to determine the formal qualities of objects
produced by industry. Th ese qualities are forming not only appearance of the object, but
mainly structural and functional relationships that transform the system into a unity in
terms of manufacturer and consumer.
Th e creative activity of defi ning a formal quality of the object is one of the most
important activities in today’s world.
Features of industrial society were limited by technology. Th e main human objective was
to serve machines, which were not suffi ciently developed and presents a major industrial
power at that time.
Technological progress and an invention of computers were responsible for
the formation of post-industrial society, the main feature of which was an increase in
the importance of the intellectual component in the production process. Th us, creative
activities have a material impact on the quality of our everyday life, managing technical
development and industrial production creates the environment of modern man, consisting
of goods of industrial production. Gradually, society has reached a critical point of
development where technological progress has become so dependent on the intelligence
and creative thinking of man, that further development is impossible without understanding
the nature of creative thinking. Th e study of the design process creates preconditions
for the transformation of postindustrial society into a new type of society where human
capabilities are not limited by manufacturing technology and miss understanding of the
nature of the creative thinking.
Discussion about methodology of the design process, have been started 50 years
ago. Science of the design and design process is divided into theory and design methodology
of design. Th e methodology involved in the general study of the formation and
practical principles of design, analyzing the practical work and thinking of designers. A
methodological study of design is inextricably linked to the understanding of the theory
of design. Design theory makes selection of knowledge about the design, determining
which ones are useful and which not. As well recently the theory of design is used in
the development of new design tools. An example is the research in the fi eld of development
of artifi cial intelligence. Application of this technology in practice will signifi cantly
increase the eff ectiveness of human decisions. Th e study of processes which form creative
thinking opens up new possibilities in the development of new tools and methodologies
in improving design. Creative thinking, like any other kind of thinking is directly related
to the ability and the principles of the human brain. Th e study the principles of brain
work is an important component in understanding the nature of creativity.
It is interesting that some of the most famous inventions of modern times were
Made by people who had not been specifi cally trained to work in the fi eld in which they
made their contribution (Clegg 1969):

Research has shown that London taxi drivers is suffi ciently developed hypothalamus
- a part of the brain responsible for the ability to navigate in space. Does this prove
that some ability as the ability to think creatively, can be specifi cally developed through
constant practice?
An experiment recently conducted by a group of German scientists, led by
Th omas Ebert, scanned the areas of the brain controlling the fi ngers of both hands from
groups of musicians and non-musicians. Th e brains of musicians, specifi cally violinists
and cellists, displayed a marked disparity. Th e area of the motor cortex controlling
the right hand, which simply moves the bow, was no diff erent in size from that of nonmusicians.
Yet the area of the cortex controlling the four fi ngers of the left hand, which are
essential to modulate the sound
Of the instrument, was as much as fi ve times larger than this area in nonmusicians.
Th ese disparities were most pronounced with those musicians who had been
trained at an early age. We might someday be able to deduce the similar outcome for the
brain of the architect, even if this development comes at a later time.
And a fi nal word on design, this ability of the human brain that stretches with
every century … historical imprints proved its blurred existence and now we tend to
demonstrate it with scientifi c analysis, if it’s a function of the brain or a chemical input
reaction, researchers now tend to examine what history printed and move a step forward,
the answer remains as complex as the two way channeling of body and brain and maybe

Public participation: conspiracy theory...

Let's go back together to the mid 90's, to a small country in the middle east, and zoom in on its capital, in times were as teenagers, we spent times under busy car bridges listening to "expansion joints imitating the sound of machine guns" when cars moves over their surface, our families as busy bees recovering from war spent their free time brainwashed by TV screens broadcasting latest news, plans, and strategies to rebuild the city of dreams, their city of dreams. They were the citizens of the modern theater, a stage that involves spectators and audience the same way as actors do.

Here comes the latest news with local leaders announcing patriotic slogans, slogans for a city that units its people, revive their dreams, and remind them of experimental moments. Moments that Picture the past and projecting virtual images over screens, with parents realizing a moment where they met each other, of spots totally wiped out in reality, but revived on computer and physical model generation.

Still in the same time frame; after the massive destruction of a city bearing the weight of a civil war, screaming in every corner, with hate, bad memories... here a new plan was set over the table, with a face to reconstruct a city for its people, architects and planners sitting over round tables, projecting new ideas, utopia ones that can transform them into star architects, star planners. While they were busy writing a new story, a happy one, a utopia one over the face of the city, the results were writing a different story; the story of sad faces exiting meetings, because their dream can't come true, since it neither involve the public nor realize their dreams.

But under the table another story was taking place, a massive redistribution of real estate property under the code of rebuilding the city. real estate owners where paid with stocks, they became part of the market, S market, what was flattened by war, is now taken by S in exchange for stocks, nobody was able to stand against the expansion which at a certain point was obstructed by geographic real estate boundary, that is G from the east, and A from the north, the west remained an open game which was treated in the late 2000 as for the south the sea was another victim.

Before going further with the illustration it is worth mentioning that G and A will be the case study of the conspiracy theory of public participation.

Back to the illustration, now the city center was rebuilt, the dream realized. Based on the old planning of the French Mandate with no consideration of evolution of time and the need for a contemporary planning, the city was given a facelift, a plastic surgery of an old lady.

The topic here is not contemporizing a city or synchronizing it with practical, locomotive, speed... but to shed an introduction on a conspiracy that totally involved the public, but uncovered finally an under table game to implement an idea away from social and public need, where no one can complain since everybody participated with their own will and euphoric experience.

Nostalgia was the first key of the brain wash experiment, now our parents can not only remember their first kiss in a virtual computer generated scheme, but can access the exact location and relive it in the city. the first impression was for every youth of the 60's that the city, his city center, is back to life, the Old wrinkled unpractical face is hiding behind Potemkin facades, painted with colors of life, love, and nostalgia, like short storied from Calvino's Invisible Cities or Joyce's Dubliners, the city was activated, tourists and locals overflowing from every side as an act to submerge and emerge in new life, saturation was impossible due to causes not to be elaborated here, and then partial abundance was the new title, few can afford what was their playground and went searching for a new place, a new promise, a new land for opportunities. ///break///page1///

The first target was achieved successfully; only high profile tourists can afford a dinner, or even smoke a Chicha in the spreading open restaurants.

The plan had to go further, now the public after realizing the truth will not fall again, they will fight for their right, involve themselves and save what remained, the outskirts are their place, they are the citizens of their homeland. I've mentioned earlier that the S plan was obstructed by the geographic east and north, and now these two outskirts are celebrating their sane decision not to go with the flow.

Because the S plan couldn't stretch to these outskirts it practiced an "urban law" siege over "G" and "A" area, with restrictions for reconstruction, modification, and extension of existing structure. The creative human mind started establishing new wonders, unimaginative solutions, they became like lab animals acting under specific circumstances, the new architecture and urban planning for the areas was a total modern theater, with "hero architects and planners", building their reputation as warriors of the new history.

We are no more teens now we are the public, learning in universities creative method, from middle class amateurs listening to symphonies of bullet harmonies resonating from expansion joints, now we are creative students finding solutions to animate a bullet texture wall in G and A areas, when the first parental dream to reviving the past failed, they shifted perspective to live the dream in their children, sending them to elite universities for best education. Now we are the future and the dream in one eye and the target for a new plan implementation in another eye.

New models were broadcasted over screens of perfect bodies, gorgeous looks, and the ignition of ego to win the race and get the perfect catch. While we were philosophizing theories in school, our free time was a hunt to achieve the level of models broadcasted and if you miss the Friday or Sunday appointment you are swallowed by the brainwashed mass and become a loser.

Events required a place, universities protect their environment and cannot transform into such playground, now the new strategy is set, and the location is spotted, the old story is revived and the plan to stretch the center to the outskirt is settled, those who where creative in solutions, were not smarter than the planners!

This is the new strategy, this is the new conspiracy, just apply the book and everybody will be happy, until they realize the truth, it will be too late, we achieved it once by playing with nostalgia, we will achieve it again with a new strategy, they will all participate, but who will profit?

Before I further elaborate on the role of stakeholders, participation, methods, and the management of the whole process, I will shed a brief history of G and A area.

Both areas where impregnated with history since old times, they witnessed all the eras of the city evolution with evidence spreading in every corner, the areas are mainly considered a residential private properties with retail shops on the first level spreading along the street, creating two streets one heading north and the other east from the city center. The result is a market place filled with life, totally crowded in day time, while at night it becomes a resting place for its owners and life continues in the city center.

Now after the first implementation of the plan which I mentioned in the beginning, the center was stripped from social local identity; thou it preserved the old city image. The second phase is on hand, youth is the element, and A is the target...///break/// page2///

The real estate holders of a deteriorating district, with harsh restrictions, became the new fake stakeholders, "consumer and project" fake. Money flow and youth engagement, few clubs will flourish, and more on the way, with a drink and dance the brainwash is active, money will flow. The area is alive again, and what was impossible unaffordable ritual for the locals to be practiced in the center, now finds an affordable playground.

The old deteriorating facades of the district now had a makeup kit, they can afford it, thanks to the brainwashed youth searching for the ideal model or a copy of what was projected over the screen. From a peaceful night sleep to a loud music nightmare, aged buildings with full makeup shaking under Decibels. The missing part of the picture is that the locals living in these building abide by laws of old rents, cheap ones. And if they are asked to leave their rented property, the owner should offer them an amount of money so they can afford a new flat. with the old state and the low prices of the area it was impossible to meet these conditions, but now with all the money flow, the real estate property was in continuous acceleration, selling a property became a dream come true, you can afford paying for all the rented apartments and still preserve a huge amount of money, to buy a new property somewhere else and send your children for a better education in university. A vicious circle! Your children want to achieve what they where brainwashed for.

The other side of the story is who can afford buying such property? The answer is simply sponsors of the old plan!

With enough money to buy a new property and run away from all the loud noises:" no more Norberg-Schulz's genius loci, if you can't fight the flow, either follow it or go search for a resting place", now massive flow of inhabitants started moving out, shifting loci with pleasure after a long and bloody fight to define their existence in war time, and living an urban siege in peace time, most of them left to a new destination after being attached to their roots.

Defining a birth of a water garden with a survey involving the need of public, of how they participated in creating a relief spot from daily pressure, and how the physicality and blossoming of a garden came to life with a landscape designer painting a surface with a human natural touch and how the management of such a project and maintenance of such a garden, would have been a pleasant discussion and example of public involvement in the city structure and planning.

But this paper over sheds light on a different strategic planning and shift gaze towards mass eradication of a social structure from their historical existence with their total involvement in the process, taking part in an innocent action, brainwashed with time, ending up accepting their own will, and waking up to their circumstances, after it was too late to go back in time, and efface what was written with a new dark ink structure over the map of what was once their city.

Now all that can be done is a peaceful parade of people with candles marching their old street with stabilized architects praying to conserve an old structure that is destined to be bulldozed and wiped, to be replaced with a new high state residential project, and again the public will be heard and the project postponed, until the old house deteriorates and fall down, and this will never be a long process, because the hands of the new stakeholders will dig a hole in the roof, eliminate the internal partitions, and the old house will fall after a season rain.////breaklll page3///

This is a paper of everybody participate but someone else profit, it's a shift in stakeholder, virtual ones with a virtual plan, but over-ambitious to become the inhabitants of the new era for an old area, they are active participants on a high mind manipulation level, armed with the mechanism of greed with tools that are nothing but the old stakeholders who saw a vision to rebuild their dream city, revive their memory, and manage a better playground that fit the youth of their children. But they ended up the victims of a process managed on a higher level of virtual reality, of television brainwashing, and the daily needs of globalization and localized.

Utopic planning and involvement of public may prevent conflict, but all this flourishes when good social capital intention is practiced, and thou the social structure is totally involved and react based on their needs and will, this paper demonstrate how two opposed stake holders, one working in the shades and the other involved voluntary and trustfully, because; "he", the public participant was convinced that he's being involved for good deeds and a prosperous future. Instead of shaping places, this was fragmenting the continuity of a social tradition and a decisive practice to eradicate the social structure which totally involve them by satisfying their needs in an interactive brain washed practice leading to the elimination of physical historical urban tissue, and replace it with the desire of the new virtual stakeholders.

Summing up what preceded, it is clear now how the media and the virtual reality was put into action, providing a virtual recreational zone of flashing images over a screen, of subliminal messages to shape a new opinion within a group, and towards a larger group, and finally reaching a whole community, although it is worth mentioning that some youthful groups realized the internal game and even if it was late to react, they went on using the same media tools, tagging city artifacts and creating an innocent movement, with media processing, physical interaction and sometimes social workshops. I personally took part in what was called studio B, in 2007, and while writing this essay, I browsed the internet to get updates on their recent activity; the end result was the website cannot be found! the group realized that it was too late to save what was captured but were working with a Dutch NGO to limit the circle diameter spread, it is clear that they were struck by daily needs and went searching for the opportunity to sustain in the classical way.

in the second part of this essay I will take the opportunity to describe district G's situation, and since the above process proved to be effective, and the resistance was overcome, district G undergone the same process and it is worth defining it's situation more by illustrations rather than words.///break///page4///

The same old story was put into action, as mentioned before; the application for district A proof success and people are still paying for the outcome...

And since projects are rarely brand new; where they change and develop over the course of time, in this case it was war, and the after war effect, now the first step was examine the existing situation, learning from the surrounding to apply an overall project plan that was drawn under tables, of conspiracy and greed. But what appeared on the surface was no developed plan and they convinced people that they are making considerations for what is the new impact and outcomes and how the new design will impact the society, base­­­­d on their needs and involvement, assuring them that they are an active part of the team, and they are a critical part in affecting the development of the engagement plan; which in fact they sure where an effective part, but in a different way.

They revised what could end up a conflict between real and fake stakeholders, establishing a high level of complexity which can be understood on different levels and considered a high project flexibility that can respond to change; it was all about the consumer demand, an addictive drug where the final result could be an overdose!

A "mind map" was generated considering the social, environmental, cultural, and economical ingredients, (1)social youth where brain washed by TV advertisement and program, (2)universities with their innocent view traced out the deteriorating state of the environmental and economical statue of area "G", and tried to tackled the issue on "a design and theoretical base"; but all the projected remained in drawers or colored the interior corridors of design departments, (3)as for culture, this will always be the hottest spot and most vulnerable, especially when met with the ethnic conflict of the whole country, and the determination to divide any ideology based on ethnicity.

Thou stressing the same ideas may commit the paper to fall into repetition, but it also commits so much wonder of how the exact same process proved success again!!!

with a final statement on the paper and a reflection on reality of defining the stakeholders, grouping them into two categories but only the fake ones act over the table and the real new ones from under the table, they fully engaged the fake one in generating the new plan but in reality, they were totally excluded and transformed from real estate stakeholders into outsiders looking for a new place, a new community...

in this new world where we commit ourselves to believe in democracy, in a world where the society is a trustworthy environment with good intentions, where people's will be done, where no more capitalist plans designed and then distributed to the people, where the ability to reside in a better environment is based on generating a plan that involves the public, not just to get support for the plan and facilitate its implementation, but to provide a better world, I look back over all this paper missing the positive plan and conclude that what the public need is what a hidden capitalist plan wants, it is all a matter of time, now the media can play the role to brainwash society, transform ideologies, and the outcome is that we can't kill capitalism. Now we accept it with our own will, although we as architects and planners try to involve, "with total innocence" the public and define out stakeholders but we end up another victim, and if with our plan we involve the public by surveys, all mean of involvement, and build their need, we are still activated by the capitalist plan with surveys of brain media wash.

in this new economic world order that neglect the low social states, and target more the middle elite and high societies, I find the study and social involvement in public participation remain crippled and can only be applied on a narrow level of implementation, and this will lead at one point to Corbusier 20's statement in what translate to: "regard the people social statue, social structure, and need or this may lead to revolution... "Or maybe by looking to neoliberals' movement...

dialogue between voyeurism and exhibitionism

From the project entitled " dialogue between voyeurism and exhibitionism" and the idea of the adaptation of glass material as a skin envelop, from the temple of Solomon passing through the glass chain in modernity and reaching the contemporary world of architecture, there was always this expression of transparency and visual permeability.
In his project description Jeremy Fletcher "tuning the privacy of each room, using shades or scrims to have larger or smaller openings, as you would change the aperture of a camera." this triggers the idea of voyeurism not as a pervert observer but as the audience watching the performance of the city.
On a different level; in this digital world of "YOUTUBE and FACEBOOK" a new performance takes over and the privacy is exposed, thou it could be a fake exposure of the human activity or more as a selective exposure, but still this defines the swing between concrete and virtual voyeurism of the human expression.
This city life public performance, and the peeking on other's habitat performance, transforms the city into a collective interaction of physical and visual, and with further elaboration and application on a city like Warsaw, I can start understanding and experiencing different senses of the city, for now this could be between sense of touch and that of vision.
1- by defining various parts of the city from the city center to districts like Ursus a trace of the physical exhibitionism can be detected, from public zones to totally gated plots.
2- on another level the play of visual transparency and urban exhibition where glassed windows are no more the source of light but transparent screens controlled by curtains " camera aperture" that defines activities and private performance.
The idea is still blurred in my mind, trying to apply this concept of physical and visual voyeurism from gated plots, to curtain window control, and how to trace it and document it as geo-information system. it can be based on observation with camera shots of different intervals of the day and trace these window transparency and then document them, and at another level draw a comparison between physical transparency of one area v/s total gated areas.
