ASK.the.conference will have its first edition exploring the role of research in the creative practice and the education of professionals focusing on architecture and spatial planning. Supported by Research by Design the conference will combine theory and applied science, academia and practice for the creative transformation of our human space taking into account a consistent environmental awareness. It is an opportunity to showcase best practices, state-of-the art research and innovative approaches to teaching.

It will be held in the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology on 26 and 27 of February 2016. If you are a professional, professor, researcher, student or a curious about the theme you are invited to take place in the discussion. The conference is part of the preparation of a new doctoral program in English and is funded by by FSS (Fundusz Sypendialny i Szkoleniowy) and FRSE (Fundacja Rozwoju Systemu Edukacji) / Norway Grants. The PhD program is situated in the context of digital technology and environmental awareness related to architecture and urban design.


ASK.the.conference is organized around main themes trending in design and training in the domain of architecture and spatial planning. Research in Architectural and Spatial DesignWhat role does research have in Architectural and Spatial Design today? How is research methodology coping with the increasing impact of IT and experimentation? Is research applied in design practices? Are innovative technologies used to deliver not only new designs, but also efficiency? What are the best practices connected to research by design?
History of Research in Architecture and Spatial DesignHow has research in the field of architecture and spatial design shifted from a solid body of knowledge in the past to individual leading research today? Is experimentation changing the weights of practice and theory in research? Many designers have their own line of investigation inside their practice and not commonly share among others this knowledge. Does today’s emphasis on uniqueness leave no space for sharing this knowledge?
PhD Education and ResearchPhD program structures have been changing with the strong influence of technology and research methodologies. While in scientific methodology facts are proven true and are repeatable, a more subjective way of carrying case-based studies have also received professional consensus. How are PhD programs and courses influenced? How are these trending programs implemented? Has the methodology shift influence thesis’ research and formats?
Teaching Innovative CoursesProfessors and instructors face pedagogical challenges when presenting technologies that might not have been fully explored by themselves. Do you have any successful experience or best practice to share? Which teaching methods have been better applied in your experience and what are the effectively grading methods capable of grasping this – almost individual – knowledge acquiring?
Transformations in Architectural and Urban Design TrainingAre case-based research one of the fundamental points of the development of theory from practice, of applying research by design in architectural and urban design training today? How can professors and instructors associate theory and practice while communicating with other aspects of training – even inside the same faculty – preventing closed specialized packages of knowledge delivered to students?
Environmental Influence in Design and SimulationThe built environment’s increasing influence on the natural habitat and vice-versa plays an important role in design. How can architecture and spatial design aligned with modern technology foresee long-term consequences of design interventions and minimize their negative impact? How can new possibilities of design simulation help to communicate environmental awareness? What role does spatial monitoring of the built environment help achieve a more sustainable use?
CAD Applied Technologies in Architecture and Urban DesignArchitects and urban planners rely heavily on CAD tools to represent their design and to communicate the design’s process. What tools have been used to address new forms of design, parameters collection and application, project organization, conceptual process and other aided design?
Redefining Building TypologiesHow do architects, urban planners and designers produce living spaces inside the contemporary multi-layered city? Are there categories that derive from technology, sociology, economy and / or the environment that redefine design typologies?
Interdisciplinary Analysis in DesignAre there new technologies and methodologies for analyzing major role players and parameters in our living space today? How are professionals and researchers dealing with the on-going transformation of the global and local economy, social inequities, governance and public participation, communication with new media and climate changes?

Faculty of Architecture
In 2015 the Faculty of Architecture at WUT is celebrating its centennial anniversary. Established in 1915 as one of the four faculties of WUT, the architectural education places an emphasis on practice, based in the close integration of technology and art while strongly supported by a wide range of humanities. Such was the idea of the school’s founders – graduates from Europe’s leading universities. These first professors were outstanding architects whose works during the inter war period created the standard for Polish architecture.After its re-establishment in 1945 the faculty attracted leading architects of the pre-war period. The necessity to rebuild the country prompted the development of the “Polish School of Conservation of Architectural Monuments”, which creatively integrated architectural and historical thought and become the pride of the post-war decades.Today the school is one of nine public run architecture schools in Poland. With over 1000 students and 140 professors, the faculty is one of the largest research and teaching centers of architecture and urban planning in Poland.

ask logo small Architecture for the Society of Knowledge is the English-speaking master program of the WUT’s Faculty of Architecture. It was founded in 2010 and is focused on emerging technologies in design and creative social and environmental aspects of architecture and urban planning. ASK students research contemporary design practices as well as media and digital technologies applied to the design and construction of the contemporary city.

The program concentrates on three general areas of an architect’s activity: design, materials and theory. It covers digital media in design, prototyping with the usage machines, collaborative design, and sustainable, intelligent buildings. Simultaneously, it teaches the basics of architecture: cultural heritage, history, theory paradigms, social aspects of spatial design, and education through new didactic methods.

ASK aims to equip young architects with the experience required for:

  • active participation in the global architecture community;
  • critical interpretation of design and design collaboration;
  • collaborative and interdisciplinary practice of architecture and urban design;
  • architectural and spatial research exploring new design technologies and theories.
